FULL TILT POKER BLOG

This is part of an ongoing series in which I summarize some of the most useful offerings at the Full Tilt Poker Academy, an incredible, free resource offered by Full Tilt to live up to its promise as the place to “learn, chat, and play with the pros.”
One of the biggest scores made by a Full Tilt pro in online tournament poker occurred in 2008 when Erick Lindgren won a $300 + $22 NLHE FTOPS event, scoring over $290,000 for the victory. Thanks to the Full Tilt Poker Academy, members have an unprecedented opportunity to watch the key hands from that final table from Lindgren’s perspective, as he explains how he planned his final table strategy, how he executed it, and how he changed his strategy as play unfolded.
For me, the defining moment of the Lesson was when the host, in his opening remarks, reviewed the payout structure and the first prize, and explained, “Obviously, as a professional, that’s the spot I want. You don’t get her enough, you need to win. The question is, what are my opponents thinking?”

The day before the FTOPS XVI Main Event, Full Tilt announced that it had reached agreement with Annette Obrestad to become a Full Tilt pro. She started her career in red by hosting the FTOPS Main Event the next day. As part of her hosting responsibilities, she agreed to answer questions in the Pro Chat. It is an obligation that goes with hosting, and Full Tilt Pros handle with different degrees of seriousness. A few are simply no-shows. Most make some effort to comply. Finally, a few – really considerate people or blabbermouths like myself – answer hundreds of questions. Annette Obrestad, though, may have set a record.

Among Full Tilt’s cornucopia of World Series of Poker Promotions is something called “The FTPA Main Event Challenge”. It involves just one seat and it sounds from the abbreviation like a public works project from the Roosevelt Administration but don’t be fooled. If you look closely at the promotion, you will not only find a way to get into the Main Event, but you will also discover one of Full Tilt’s greatest and most under-appreciated assets.

I had a fantasy about covering this year’s NBC Heads-Up Championship. If you look at my posts from 2007 through 2009, you will see a large number of posts in a very compressed period. You will also see, in my opinion, a few really excellent posts. Even though I was writing while the matches were being played – and there’s always a lot going on – some of the posts did a great job in capturing the excitement, or the feeling in the room, or some quality that makes poker and poker players special.

[This is my final post in the series about the 2010 NBC Heads-Up Championship. NBC started broadcasting the matches two weeks ago, with an hour of coverage on April 18, following that up with two hours last Sunday, the 25th. Today and the following two Sundays (May 2, 9, and 16), you can see another two hours per week of the HUC. Broadcast coverage wraps up on NBC with three hours on Sunday, May 23. Following this post, I will write another entry helping you organize and access the posts, if you want to read them serially or in conjunction with the NBC schedule. Whether good or bad, I’d like to hear your comments about my coverage, both in general and in comparison with what you’re watching on NBC. You can post comments after the blog, or e-mail me at [email protected]. (I’d prefer you post your comments, but I just want to hear from you!)]

Or his brother. Or some stranger that just decided to give me money because (a) he’s crazy, (b) I’m crazy, or (c) one of us is conning the other in an incredibly sophisticated fashion.
