Born and raised in New York, actor and charity fundraiser Mekhi Phifer grew up playing poker with his family. He still enjoys playing poker to this day, mostly playing online because it fits the travelling demands of his acting career.
Mekhi made his screen debut in 1995, beating thousands of hopefuls to play the lead in the film Clockers. In 1999, he acted alongside fellow Friend of Full Tilt Poker Don Cheadle in A Lesson Before Dying, before going on to star in films such as I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and 8 Mile, and the TV medical drama ER. In June 2002, Mekhi was honored with the Rising Star Award at the American Black Film Festival. He is currently starring as an FBI Agent in the FOX TV series Lie To Me.
An active fundraiser, Mekhi has put his poker skills to good use, raising over $30,000 for charities by playing in celebrity tournaments such as the World Poker Tour LA Celebrity Classic at the Commerce Casino. In 2009, Mekhi helped raise funds for the humanitarian crisis in Darfur by playing in Full Tilt Poker’s FTOPS – Ante Up For Africa charity tournament. He is also the Chairman of The Vine Group – a charitable organization which provides English speaking countries in Africa with educational assistance through scholarships and equipment.
When he’s not filming or fundraising, Mekhi loves travel and especially enjoys camping. He is also an avid fan of off-road racing, competing in the sport when time allows.
